If you are a regular reader of Fruit Maven (and you memorize all my ratings and reviews so you can recite them to your friends at parties), you may recall that I am not the biggest fan of the Kiwano Melon. It’s a total rockstar fruit to look at but completely dull and annoying to actually eat. So I was determined to figure out how to make this little blowfish fruit a party pleaser. And wa-la! It hit me — cocktail of course! So I started with one of my favorite recipes - the French 75 and doctored it up with kiwano melon and mint. This cocktail has a very grown up flavor, which is the perfect counterpoint to the ridiculousness of the “cup” I put it in. You host a party with this cocktail and it just screams CONFIDENCE. You’ll be getting promoted and hi-fiving people in your new corner office in no time.

Minty Blowfish

1/2 kiwano melon

3 mint leaves

2 ounces gin (Hendricks is excellent for this)

1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice (or about half a lemon)

Ice cubes

Champagne

Slice Kiwano Melon in half. Take a knife and cut around the edges of the melon between the peel and the flesh. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh and place in cocktail shaker. Set aside the melon half.

Add the mint leaves and muddle vigorously (muddle way more than you think – those little gelatin pods are not that interested in giving up their juice. MUDDLE!).

Add gin and lemon juice.

Shake with ice and strain in to melon half, or use a martini glass if you are too prissy to hold a prickly cup.

Top with champagne.

Garnish with lemon or kiwano slice.

If you tend to use phrases like “liquid lunch” or “sandwich in a glass” to justify your binge drinking, then this is the post for you!

You might think that here at Chez Fruit Maven (oh yes – I will lamely use the word “chez” if I want to) it’s all about healthy living and eating. Surely I am eating fruit for all my snacks and juicing my breakfast and making fruit parfaits for the occasional, well deserved dessert. Of course I am — every year until about noon on January 1st. Later, at approximately 12:01pm I go back to my lazy, day spa loving self and order a fancy martini from poolside while mocking the girls with the fake tans and melon boobs. (Ok, so this might not be my exact life but believe me it is really, really close.)

What is my point here? I am starting a cocktail column! Every so often, when a particular fruit strikes my fancy, I’ll be posting a recipe of my latest amusement. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. And please, let me know if you try them or if you make up some of your own. Here we go (yeah, I’m hoping to get better at naming them):

Two-quat-tini

1 limequat

1 mandarinquat

2 teaspoons powdered sugar

a pinch of cayenne (use a light touch here or you will seriously mess this up)

2 ounces light rum

2 ounces club soda

crushed ice

Slice the limequat and mandarinquat in half or quarters and place in the bottom of a cocktail shaker

Add the powdered sugar and the pinch of cayenne

Muddle! Muddle! Muddle!

Add crushed ice, light rum and club soda

Strain into an appropriate glass (I have no idea what is appropriate)

Garnish with a twist of peel (or stop trying to impress everyone and just drink it)

APPEARANCE 3 out of 5 stars

Green and yellow blotchy skin; squatty body, with pale yellow flesh and white seeds. This is a funny little frump of a grapefruit in the looks department.

AROMA 5 out of 5 stars

Strong, floral, sweet and acidic; pure grapefruit scent. Smelling this I am oddly compelled to wash my hair.

TEXTURE 3.5 out of 5 stars

Little capsules of extremely juicy flesh; tons of seeds.

TASTE 4 out of 5 stars

Sweet, not acidic at all, quiet and concentrated grapefruit essence.

OVERALL 3.88 out of 5 stars

In some ways this is a confusing grapefruit to me. It is mild and lacks the sourness that so many grapefruits have and yet it isn’t extremely sweet like a ruby red either. It’s just a mellow yellow grapefruit with an insane amount of seeds. Nonetheless I keep buying it because it tastes so refreshing. If only I was inclined to do some kind of cleanse. This would definitely be my grapefruit of choice. But I won’t be doing that any time soon as I have spent a good number of years amassing these toxins and have no intention of letting them go that easily. Mine!

NOTES

So this grapefruit just gets more confusing with every bite and every lookup. Apparently it isn’t really a grapefruit exactly. It is a cross between a Frua Mandarin orange and a Siamese Sweet pummelo. And a Frua is actually a cross between a King mandarin and a Dancy tangerine. All of which is why it has another name too, the Mandalo. I have one word for you Cocktail grapefruit — Imposter!
