If you find yourself humming songs in the grocery store that go a little something like, “Yummy, yummy, yummy, I’ve got love in my tummy and I feel like alovin’ you,” then this is the fruit for you!

(If you do not know this song, please just stop and go over to youtube and listen because I promise this song will make you smile. Next thing you know YOU will be the one humming it in the store next to me rummaging for some delicious fruit to take home.)

Now let me tell you about these little yummies. Wandering through my favorite farmer’s market this Sunday, I ran across these plums and was shocked to see them available. It is most definitely not stone fruit season here in Southern California. But I had just been surprised at the stand next door by finding fresh Christmas figs (it is also not traditionally fig season – post to come later this week), so I figured it was just a crazy day and I should start asking questions. A quick chat with one of the ladies, who I believe may have been the founder of the farm, Annie, told me that the season for these did in fact end late October, but they have been keeping them cold and they still taste fantastic. Only a week or two left of their stash! I’m so glad I stopped by.

APPEARANCE 3.5 out of 5 stars

This is a rather large plum, more the size of a small apple with shiny burgundy, speckled skin and golden yellow flesh with a pretty red outline.

AROMA 2.5 out of 5 stars

No noticeable fragrance.

TEXTURE 4 out of 5 stars

Firm and a bit crunchy with a nice amount of juice.

TASTE 4 out of 5 stars

Well rounded flavor that is nice and sweet with a hint of tart at the end.

OVERALL 3.5 out of 5 stars

With a word like yummy in the title, this fruit had a lot to live up to and I would say it did. I tend to favor the softer plums, but this crunchy little number is, well, yummy. It has the perfect amount of sweetness without being cloying and finishes up with a tart little twist – never bitter like many of the plums and pluots tend to be. Delightful.

Sexy Fruit for Valentine’s Day

There is something sexy, enticing and adventurous about fruit. In some ways trying a new fruit is like falling in love. It requires abandon and risk. You have to search for it and once found, you have to be patient and careful so you don’t bruise or damage the beautiful nectar inside. Sometimes it works out and you have the most amazing experience, and sometimes you just end up wondering why you wasted so much time admiring something so dull that when you really think about it, kind of smells like vomit.

And so in the spirit of love and Valentine’s Day, I say ditch the flowers and party it up with FRUIT. There are lots of ways to go, so you have no excuses.

If you are the kind of person who peels grapes and tells kids they are eyeballs right before you eat them, then this is the fruit for you!

Kind of ugly mottled brown on the outside, gorgeous heart shape with gory looking blood red flesh and juice

Very faint grassy fragrance

Perfectly soft and juicy — like eating a real heart! (assuming here that hearts are soft and juicy – seems like they should be, does it not?)

TASTE 4.5 out of 5 stars

Perfectly sweet flavor with only the slightest bit of tartness to balance it out

When I first saw this plum I thought it was kind of goofy looking. Being the vain girl that I am, I only noticed the weird browness of it and completely missed the fantastic heartness of it. Then I cut it open and wholy wowzers–I fell in love. October has brought great things to the world, my birthday being one and Halloween being the other. Now I can add dressing up as a witch and carrying one of these around to scare young children. I’ve been dreaming about it all week. mwah ha ha.

If you are a punk rock girl with green hair and striped tights, but deep down you just want to be a cheerleader, then this is the fruit for you!

Outside is a pale green, yellow color that makes me think it is not ripe, but the texture and fragrance says it is, inside is a lovely sunny yellow/orange – gorgeous

Sweet, appealing smell makes me anxious to try it

Juicy, great texture, very pleasant bite, almost crisp

Sweet, a little bit grassy in a good way

The color of the skin made me think it wasn’t ripe but the inside and smell was so appealing that I loved biting into it, even after having tried four other types of plums and pluots. It was a lovely plum and one I would definitely look for again.
